Bayer Leverkusen chief insists Chelsea will not get ‘Covid discount’ on Havertz

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has warned Chelsea that they will not be afforded a discount on Kai Hevertz, despite the widespread financial problems brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Havertz linked with Chelsea

Havertz, despite having only recently turned 21, is one of the top stars in the Bundesliga right now.

The versatile attacking midfielder enjoyed a superb 2018/19 season, which saw him notch 17 goals and four assists in 34 Bundesliga outings.

And despite something of a dip in form early this season, the German international, who has previously been compared to Mesut Ozil and Michael Ballack, still managed to score 12 and provide six assists in 30 league appearances.

Such impressive exploits have, understandably, led to the midfielder garnering interest from some top clubs.

The outfit who have long looked set to actually clinch a deal for Havertz, though, are Premier League giants Chelsea.

Links between the Blues and Leverkusen’s crown jewel first began to emerge back in June, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano having reported this week that Havertz wants to join Chelsea.

Bayer Leverkusen chief sends warning over Havertz price

The same report claimed that the Blues would like to find an agreement for a fee of around €80m.

However, if the aforementioned comments courtesy of Rudi Voller are to be believed, then Chelsea may have to pay a bit more.

During an interview with Italian outlet the Gazzetta dello Sport, Bayer’s sporting director was asked if the German outfit have already agreed to sell Havertz.

And, after assuring that this is not the case, Voller was keen to add that there will be ‘no Covid discount’ for Chelsea:

“No, but with his talent, it means he’s on the list of all the best clubs.

“We know of the interest of a couple of clubs, especially Chelsea, but for us, the situation is quite simple; he has a two-year contract, if anyone wants him on our terms, fine, otherwise he stays here another year and we are happy.

“It won’t be easy, but for an artist like him there is no Covid discount.”
