Bastian Schweinsteiger comments highlight key issue with Solskjaer’s Manchester United

Manchester United’s 2021/22

Manchester United have, of course, endured a poor start to the 2021/22 season.

They are out of the League Cup, have struggled in a fairly weak Champions League group, and already appear to be out of the title race in the Premier League.

This is despite Man United having signed all of Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho over the summer.

And, if results do not turn around soon, it is hard to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keeping his job.

Schweinsteiger on Man United

The Norwegian of course initially did a good job of steadying the ship when he took over from Jose Mourinho.

However, it has become clear to most that Solskjaer simply is not at the level required to have Man United challenging with the best of the best.

One of the Red Devils’ main issues under their current tactician has been a lack of style.

Solskjaer’s tactical shortcomings are often highlighted in bigger games, with the United boss dependent on individual quality to bail him out.

Bruno Fernandes was a great example of this during the second half of the 2019/20 season, when the midfielder’s displays almost single-handedly secured Man United a top-four berth.

And even now, after nearly three years at the club, it is still not clear what style the Manchester giants set about trying to make use of under Solskjaer.

This is something which former Red Devils midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was keen to highlight this weekend, explaining:

“When I watch Manchester United games I don’t know how they play. I can’t guarantee you a win and as a Manchester United fan you want to know that. They keep talking about time, but you don’t have time in football. You have to win right now.”

The German also appeared to suggest that Solskjaer has had long enough at the club to make an impact, pointing to Thomas Tuchel’s success at Chelsea as evidence for why OGS should have done more:

“Manchester United are still in progress. Solskjaer keeps mentioning that. It takes too long though for me in my eyes. If you look at Manchester City or Chelsea and the impact that Tuchel had on them – it was unbelievable. They have a strategy and a DNA. They have more in their game.”
