Basel 0 – PAOK 3
There was a shock result in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Swiss powerhouse Basel crashed out of the Champions League following a 3-0 home defeat to PAOK.
PAOK cruised through to the third round of qualifiers after a 5-1 aggregate win over Basel.
PAOK won on Wednesday thanks to goals from Fernando Varela, Aleksandar Prijovic and Omar El Kaddouri.
Basel had previously qualified for the Champions League group phase in 8 of the last 9 years.
Moreover, in the one year that Basel missed out on the Champions League, the Swiss side reached the Europa League semi-final.
Liverpool’s 2018-19 Champions League boost
Basel’s Champions League exit has had a direct impact on Liverpool.
That’s because Liverpool now stand an good chance of being put in pot 2 in the draw for the Champions League group phase.
Liverpool, who remain in pot 3 for now, will be bumped up a group of Benfica lose to Fenerbahce in their third round qualifier.
Of course, Liverpool were beaten in last season’s Champions League in a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.
On a side-note, following Basel’s exit, AS Roma, who Liverpool beat in last season’s semi-final, have been guaranteed a place in pot 2.
