Barcelona supporters highlight Benzema comparison after Memphis Depay breaks Dutch international record

The head-turning production managed by Memphis Depay to date in 2021 has caused something of a stir amongst Barcelona’s fanbase on Monday night.

Oranje cruising

Depay is of course currently locked in action with his country.

In their latest qualifying fixture for next year’s World Cup in Qatar, the Netherlands welcomed minnows Gibraltar to De Kuip stadium.

Louis van Gaal’s men headed into proceedings aiming to keep alive a solid qualification record to this point, which had seen them rack up five wins from seven in Group G.

And, as things stand, the Oranje are well on their way to another comfortable victory, to maintain table-topping status.

Midway through the 2nd-half in Feyenoord, the Netherlands lead Gibraltar by four goals to nil.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring on the night, breaking free at the front post to nod home Memphis Depay’s corner from the left.

Depay then swiftly turned goalscorer himself, slotting into an empty net after being teed up by Davy Klaassen, before rounding out a stellar first-half’s work with a 2nd from the penalty spot on the stroke of the interval.

In the process, meanwhile, Barcelona’s summer addition etched his name firmly into the history books of Dutch football, as the most prolific-ever player on the international stage, over the course of a single calendar year:

And, as outlined above, on the back of their gifted attacker’s latest haul in front of goal, Barcelona’s supporters have since responded in their numbers.

Taking to social media, the Blaugrana faithful have moved to highlight the frankly remarkable production (goals and assists) managed by Depay for club and country across 2021 to date.

Some have even gone as far as to (presumably with tongue in cheek) highlight the fact that the Dutchman has racked up more direct goal contributions than Real Madrid talisman and Ballon d’Or candidate Karim Benzema:
