Jeremy Mathieu

Barcelona are set to release a defender with one year left on his deal

Releasing defender

Barcelona are set to release Jeremy Mathieu – despite the defender having a year left on his contract.

Goal claim that the club are prepared to pay the rest of Mathieu’s contract off, which is worth a whopping €2.4 million. The French centre-half only played 16 times for the Catalan giants last season.

Injuries disrupted his campaign, seeing him start just twice after February.

The decision to release Mathieu comes just three years after a €20 million move from Valencia. If the €50m buy-out clause they put in his contract looked optimistic then, it looks delusional now.

He’s expected to move to Sporting Club in Portugal when his deal is terminated.

Other Barcelona business

The club are said to have wrapped up a deal for Santos star Lucas Lima. The only problem? Santos claim Barcelona tapped him up, speaking to him before he was allowed to talk to other clubs. They’ve threatened to call FIFA.
