Barcelona rebuffed in Virgil van Dijk approach – Mirror

Virgil van Dijk

As per a report from John Cross of the Mirror, the representatives of Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk knocked back an inquiry from Spanish giants Barcelona this summer.

Liverpool stalwart

Dutch stopper van Dijk made the move to Anfield in January of last year, for a hefty £75 million, a world-record fee for a defender.

At the time, many called into question Liverpool’s wisdom in splashing out such a monumental sum on a player who had not yet proven himself as a consistent performer at the very top level of the game.

However, to say that van Dijk has since gone on to prove his doubters wrong would be putting it lightly.

The 28-year-old has, all told, been an absolute rock at the back for Liverpool over the course of his year and a half-long stint on the books of the Reds.

Van Dijk’s combination of athleticism, aerial prowess, aggression, positional awareness and poise on the ball have come together on Merseyside to see the former Celtic man develop into one of world football’s finest in his position.

Van Dijk clinches POTY

After guiding Liverpool to the final of the Champions League in his debut campaign at Anfield, this past season saw van Dijk play an integral role in both Liverpool’s historic Premier League title challenge, and the Reds taking the next step to secure the Champions League title last month.

As such, the Dutchman was deservedly rewarded for his stellar form with the award for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year:

Barca rebuffed

And, as per the aforementioned report from John Cross of the Mirror, van Dijk’s performances have inevitably resulted in another of European football’s top clubs expressing an interest in the stopper’s services.

The outfit in question are La Liga champions Barcelona.

The Blaugrana are said to have made contact with the 28-year-old’s representatives, to gauge his interest in a move to the Camp Nou.

However, it was quickly made abundantly clear that van Dijk has no intentions of departing Merseyside any time soon:

‘Do not expect it to happen for a moment, but Barcelona made enquiries about whether Virgil van Dijk could be tempted to leave Liverpool.’

‘They were quickly given short shrift by the Dutch defender’s representatives. They did not bother taking it further.’
