According to a report from Spanish outlet AS, both Barcelona and Manchester City are preparing moves for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.
Weigl, a 22-year-old deep-lying midfielder, has been at the Westfalenstadion since 2015, when he joined the club from 1860 Munich.
Despite his tender years, he has gone on to establish himself as an absolute mainstay in Dortmund’s setup over the past couple of seasons, with his stellar showings in the middle of the park having also enabled Weigl to rack up 5 appearances for the German national team.
The techincally-gifted starlet has long been touted as one of the most gifted young midfielders in world football, with his splendid touch, calm on the ball and pinpoint passing having led a number of Europe’s top sides to express an interest in his services.
The likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich have been linked with moves for Weigl in the past, but, as per the aforementioned report from AS, it is Barcelona and Manchester City who are set to battle it out over his signature.
Neither side’s interest comes as a real surprise, with Weigl having been likened to Blaugrana star Sergio Busquets on several occasions in the past, while the possession first attitude possessed by the midfield dynamo fits perfectly into the ethos of City boss Pep Guardiola.
However, Dortmund reportedly view Weigl as the centre-piece of their side moving forward, and are desperate to hold onto the German talent.
BVB have proven their willingness to turn down big-money offers for their top players over the last couple of seasons (Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang), meaning any potential bid for Weigl will likely have to be of an astronomical nature to even be considered by the Bundesliga giants.
