Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi has today endorsed the Blaugrana’s rumoured move for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.
Goretzka, a 22-year-old all-action German midfielder, has been with Schalke since a move from Bochum in 2013, but his contract with Die Knappen is set to expire next summer.
As a result, speculation was rife earlier this summer that the 12-time capped international had agreed to join Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2018.
However, Goretzka himself has since refuted these rumours, insisting that he has not agreed a deal with any other club.
The goalscoring midfielder, who has already netted 6 times for Germany, has been earmarked by a host of European giants as a potential free agent target next summer.
Along with Bayern, all of Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Juventus and Barcelona have been linked with moves for Goretzka, with a long-time star of the latter of these clubs having ensured that the German ‘would fit in’ with his former side.
‘Could play for any team in the world’
Speaking in an interview with German outlet SID, Xavi Hernandez, who spent the best part of two decades controlling the Blaugrana’s midfield from his deep-lying berth, explained:
‘I’ve seen him play and I think he’s a good player. Without doubt, he could play for any team the world. He would fit in well [at Barcelona].’
‘Goretzka is a young player. Germany always have good footballers and he’s one of them.’
If Barca are to secure the signature of Goretzka, then they will likely have to move swiftly, with Premier League outfit Arsenal reportedly having already scheduled talks with the midfielder’s representatives in January.
