Barcelona confirm they are preparing for life without Lionel Messi

Imagine Barcelona without Lionel Messi

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has confirmed that the club are preparing for life without talisman Lionel Messi.

The Catalan giants may have housed some incredible talent over the years but we’re reaching an end of an era.

Xavi left the club back in 2015 while Andres Iniesta left at the end of the last campaign.

Now, the attention turns to other players who are slowly approaching the end of their careers.

One of those is Lionel Messi, who will turn 32 in June.

While he’s still got at least a few years left at the top level, the day when Messi retires is slowly approaching.

Now, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted the club are already preparing for life without him.

“We have to prepare the club for the future”

Bartomeu explained that everyone knows one day Messi will decide it’s time to retire.

As a club, Barcelona have the responsibility to bring in ‘great young players’ to continue their ‘era of success’ after Messi and the current crop are gone.

“I know one day Lionel will say he’s retiring,” Bartomeu explained to Guillem Balague on his 5 live podcast.

“We have to prepare the club for the future.

“We are bringing great young players to the team because we need to continue this era of success. That’s our responsibility.

“My mandate will be finished in two seasons. So I need to leave the club in a great position and tell the new president ‘that’s our legacy’.”
