Barcelona confirm bizarre deal for Arda Turan’s departure

Spanish giants Barcelona have this morning confirmed that out of favour midfielder/attacker Arda Turan has finally departed the club, following a lengthy spell of speculation regarding his future.

Big-money switch

Turan, a 30-year-old Turkish international, made the move to Catalonia in 2015 following a hugely-successful 4-year stint with La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

Barca forked out an initial 34 million Euro, plus up to 7 million Euro in bonuses for his signature, with the capture seen as quite a coup for the Blaugrana following Turan’s stellar spell in the Spanish capital.

However, the Galatasaray youth product has since failed to make any sort of meaningful impact for the Catalans, managing just 23 La Liga starts between the 2015-16 and 2016-17 campaigns.

Large sections of Barca’s fans pleaded with the club to move Turan on over the summer transfer window, but both the board and player repeatedly insisted that a departure was never on the cards.

However, the 100-time capped Turkish international has since failed to make a single appearance for the Blaugrana to this point in the current campaign, leading to increasing speculation that Turan would finally be set for a move away from the Camp Nou this month.

The Barca man’s former club Galatasaray were heavily linked with a bid for their one-time captain, with Arsenal also having been persistently touted as a possible destination for the experienced attacking midfielder/winger.

Done deal

But, as has been confirmed on Barcelona’s official website this morning, Turan has in fact joined Turkish Super Lig leaders İstanbul Başakşehir.

However, while the fact that Turan has departed the club may not come as much of a surprise, the format of the deal to take him away from Catalunya is something of a head-scratcher.

Turan has moved to Başakşehir on a two-and-a-half-year loan deal, meaning, as things stand, that he will see out the remainder of his Barcelona contract with the Turkish outfit.

However, the Spanish giants maintain an option to sell the veteran elsewhere during this spell, if an offer from another club is forthcoming.
