Ballon D’or redemption for Lewandowski? Major announcement could help Bayern star beat Messi and co.

France takes centre stage this evening as the Ballon D’or makes a return after being cancelled last year due to COVID-19.

Messi favourite for the Ballon D’or

The prestigious golden ball award will be handed out this evening, with Lionel Messi the heavy favourite to be the next recipient.

Unsurprisingly, the list is heavily dominated by Chelsea, who won the Champions League final, and Manchester City, who won the Premier League and reached the 2021 CL final before losing to Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Both sides have five players nominated, whilst the rest of the list features a lot of the usual suspects, such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski.

The full list is as follows:

Lewandowski, Salah, Jorginho, Azpilicueta, Lukaku, Ronaldo, Foden, Gerard Moreno, Mbappe, Suarez, De Bruyne, Dias, Kjaer, Neymar, Lautaro Martinez, Messi, Pedri, Chiellini, Bruno Fernandes, Modric, Mahrez, Haaland, Kante, Mount, Bonucci, Donnarumma, Kane, Benzema, Barella, Sterling

Should Messi win, it would take him to seven Ballon D’ors, the most in history, and clear of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Redemption for Lewandowski

There are more than a few people who feel that Robert Lewandowski deserves to win this years award, after he netted 41 goals last season, as well as feeling that he was robbed by the non-event last year after the best year of his career.

Well, they could just have found an ounce of redemption. The Ballon D’or official Twitter account announced earlier today that there would be two new awards presented this evening, one of which could well make up for the lack of event last time out.

Should this prove the case, Lewandowski would surely be deserving of the prize, and it would go a long way to satisfying his vocal fanbase.

Will he pick up an award this evening?
