Stoke Keeper Butland

Bad for Everton’s Pickford: Stoke’s Butland has the edge

Jordan Pickford vs Jack Butland

On Monday in the Daily Mail, Jamie Redknapp has looked into who should be the England number one at the World Cup in Russia.

With a little over three months to go until the competition, it’s still unclear who will be in goal for the Three Lions.

Some, like Redknapp, still feel compelled to discuss West Ham’s Joe Hart as a possible starter for England. Although most would agree that Hart will be lucky to even be on the plane to Russia.

When looking at the likelier candidates to wear the gloves, Stoke’s Jack Butland and Everton’s Jordan Pickford seem to be at the top of the pile.

Jamie Redknapp: Stoke goalie is better than Everton’s

The case is made for Stoke stopper Jack Butland to be the number one this summer:

For me, Butland is our man. Yes, he messed up against Leicester. Stoke were leading 1-0 and his error gifted the home side their second-half equaliser.

It was an horrendous mistake but Butland’s reaction to conceding an own goal was first class. He went on to make two of the saves of the season to thwart Riyad Mahrez and Harry Maguire. Butland could easily have gone into his shell, but instead he stood up and got on with his job.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford doesn’t fill me with confidence, while Fraser Forster of Southampton is in a similar position to Hart after dropping down the pecking order at his club.

On the issue of Butland’s mistake against Leicester, it’s also worth noting that the goalie took to social media to apologise for his error.

Could there be any other goalies in the mix for England?

Gareth Southgate was at Burnley versus Southampton on Saturday, suggesting that Nick Pope or the returning Tom Heaton could still have a chance of being in the England squad this summer.
