Bad for Barcelona: Philippe Coutinho’s Liverpool exit

Philippe Coutinho & Liverpool

Sorry Liverpool fans. It’s happening again.

For what feels like the billionth time this has happened, Liverpool fans will wake up on Sunday morning to stories linking Philippe Coutinho with an Anfield exit.

And the source? Of course, it’s come from the Catalan press. Sport, to be exact.

Barcelona & Coutinho

Barcelona’s interest in Philippe Coutinho was one of the stories of the summer.

Liverpool dug their heels in and despite constant speculation in the final month of the window, Coutinho remains at Anfield.

Since returning to the Liverpool first team, Philippe Coutinho has been in impressive form.

The Brazilian playmaker has scored in three successive Liverpool matches, against Leicester, Spartak Moscow and Newcastle.

He’s also forced his way back into the Brazil XI. That’s left Chelsea’s Willian on the bench.

PSG v Barcelona

The big news in Sport on Sunday is that PSG are hoping to sign Coutinho ahead of Barcelona.

It’s believed that Neymar is calling for the Liverpool star to join PSG, while the club’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi “is committed to the signing” after the Brazilian’s request.

PSG, it’s reported, are willing to match Barcelona’s effort to sign Coutinho. The Paris club are set to offer Liverpool 150 million euros for Coutinho in the summer.

But where would Coutinho fit into the PSG team? There’s currently no obvious spot for the Brazilian in the side, as Edinson Cavani, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe hold down the front-three slots in Unai Emery’s side.

For the record, Philippe Coutinho is contracted to Liverpool until 2022 which means the Merseyside giants hold all the cards in this situation.
