The agent of new Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel has revealed that his client rejected interest from Manchester United to join the German side.
The Belgian spent the past couple of seasons with Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian after time with Zenit.
Following his side’s performances at the World Cup in Russia, it was time for him to return to Europe.
There was interest from several clubs but he eventually joined Borussia Dortmund.
Now, his agent has revealed that while there was interest from Manchester United and Napoli, with both options being rejected.
‘There were other candidates, Manchester United wanted him, as well as Napoli,” He explained to Het Laatste Nieuws
‘But I told Axel, “At Dortmund you are the number one, at Manchester you are one of many. And at Napoli too”.’
The Belgian has also been talking about his move to Dortmund.
He explained that the club is ‘one of the best teams in Europe’ and he is ready to help the club meet their objectives.
“Dortmund are one of the best teams in Europe,” the Belgian enthused on BVB-TV, as cited by the Bundesliga website.
“I think that when you start as a professional, it’s always your dream to play in the top leagues, at top clubs, and now I am.
“I’m 29, but for me it’s the best age, because you have more experience. I’m ready to achieve the club’s objectives and give my best for the team.
“After the World Cup, it was important for me to come back to Europe.
“I spoke with the coach, and sporting director Michael Zorc, and they showed me support and love, which was really important.”
