Aubameyang reveals key role Arteta played in convincing him to stay at Arsenal

Aubameyang signs new Arsenal contract

Tuesday’s headline news in England, of course, surrounded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The hitman’s future at the Emirates had been up in the air for some time, with Aubameyang, up until Tuesday, having entered the final year of his contract.

It had even been reported back in April that the capital giants had shelved contract talks with the Gabonese international

However, after months of speculation, the 31-year-old finally put an end to all of the uncertainty surrounding his future.

It was confirmed on Tuesday evening that Aubameyang had put pen to paper on a new three-year deal at Arsenal:

‘Stay here and have a legacy’

Before agreeing to fresh terms in north London, though, the former Borussia Dortmund man did appear to have options elsewhere.

It has even been reported that La Liga powerhouse FC Barcelona made a concrete offer for Aubameyang.

As such, after penning a new deal, the forward has provided some insight regarding his decision to stay at Arsenal.

And, based on Auba’s comments, Mikel Arteta played a key role in his eventual choice, with the Spaniard’s plans to help the prolific attacker build ‘a legacy’ at the Emirates having evidently hit home:

“I had quite a lot of time to think about it. I’ve been thinking about it since a year [ago].

“I also had a chat with Mikel, that I think he gave me something very clear about the idea of the future of the club and about me.

“He was straight and honest and that’s what I like because we are always honest. He said: ‘Okay, you can maybe leave. I don’t know what your mind is [thinking] right now, but you can leave and go for trophies at other clubs or you can stay here and have a legacy’.

“This, for me, was the key word.”
