Atletico withdraw complaint against Barcelona over Antoine Griezmann transfer – Sport

As per a report from Spanish outlet Sport, the official complaint lodged by Atletico Madrid against La Liga rivals Barcelona, regarding Antoine Griezmann’s move to the latter, has been officially withdrawn.

Griezmann joins Barca

12 months on from the Frenchman turning down a Camp Nou switch in favour of remaining with Atletico, speculation linking Griezmann with a move to Spanish champions Barcelona reemerged in force this summer.

This came on the back the 28-year-old confirming his intention to finally depart the Wanda Metropolitano back in May:

‘It’s been an incredible five years. Thank you very much for everything. I will take you in my heart.’

And, despite hugely-conflicting subsequent rumours regarding the extent of the Blaugrana’s interest, it was nevertheless widely-assumed that Ernesto Valverde’s men would eventually clinch a deal for Griezmann.

As such, the attacker’s move to the Camp Nou finally being made official last month came as little surprise.

In an announcement across the club’s social media platforms, Barca confirmed Griezmann’s signing on a 5-year deal:

‘Agreement was done before his fee dropped’

Griezmann’s Catalunya switch, though, did not come without its complications.

An Atletico statement immediately following Barcelona’s announcement regarding the attacker’s arrival saw Los Rojiblancos call into question the validity of the transfer.

Atleti insisted that a pre-arranged agreement between Griezmann and Barca meant that the 120 million Euro that the La Liga champions eventually paid was ‘insufficient’:

‘The amount deposited is insufficient to pay his release clause because it is obvious that the agreement between the club and Barcelona was done before his fee dropped from €200 to €120 million.’

This was followed by La Liga president Javier Tebas confirming that, on the back of an official Atletico complaint, Spanish football’s governing body had been forced to open a formal investigation into the matter.

To this point, though, no further information regarding the situation had been forthcoming.

Atleti give up

This was until yesterday, when a report from Ramon Fuentes of Sport revealed that Atletico had withdrawn their complaint.

This comes amid claims that the capital giants never had any realistic chance of winning their case against Barcelona.

In addition, Griezmann has now already lined out for the Blaugrana in La Liga, during the Spanish champions’ opening day defeat at the hands of Athletic Bilbao.
