The first game at Wanda Metropolitano
After many years of waiting and a full month into the La Liga season, the Wanda Metropolitano opened.
The first game in Atletico Madrid’s new stadium ended in a 1-0 win for Diego Simeone’s side.
Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal of the game for Atletico in the 61st minute. Angel Correa bagged the first assists in the new stadium.
Atletico Madrid 1 – Malaga 0
Atletico’s season had started with two draws in their opening three La Liga matches – which were all away from home.
Atletico also played away in their first game in the Champions League in midweek – drawing 0-0 at Roma.
Generally the new stadium appears to have been well received by both fans of the club and those who got to visit on the opening day.
Incredible Antoine Griezmann stat
It was somewhat fitting that Antoine Griezmann scored the first goal at the Wanda Metropolitano.
All 32 of Griezmann’s La Liga goals for Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon were in wins.
And, this of course continued against Malaga on Saturday night at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Hugo Sanchez controversy
One small sour note did though emerge at the new stadium today.
Outside the Wanda Metropolitano, there’s a plaque for every Atletico Madrid player with 100 or more appearances for the club.
Hugo Sánchez, who moved from Atletico Madrid to Real Madrid, was not a popular choice…
