Atletico Madrid to contest Barcelona’s signing of Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid are not happy

Atletico Madrid have announced that they will contest Barcelona’s signing of Antoine Griezmann, claiming that they are still owed another €80 million.

It was confirmed by Barcelona on Friday afternoon that the club had signed Griezmann.

The deal had seemingly been in the pipeline for a while, with reports linking the player with a move to the Camp Nou having started a while back.

Confirmation of the deal, though, was only announced on Friday, with Barcelona paying Griezmann’s €120 million release clause.

However, Atletico Madrid have now announced that they will contest the signing.

Atletico and Barcelona set for legal battle

In a statement released by Atletico, they claim that the amount deposited for Griezmann’s signing is ‘insufficient’.

That’s because the club believes that an agreement between the player and Barcelona came before July 1st, when Griezmann’s release clause stood at €200 million.

Their statement read:

‘Atlético de Madrid considers that the deposited amount is insufficient to cover his buyout clause, since it is obvious that the agreement between the player and FC Barcelona was closed before the clause was reduced from EUR 200 million to EUR 120 million.

‘It was also prior to the date on which the clause was modified the communication that the player made on 14 May announcing his disassociation from the club.’

It doesn’t stop there.

Atletico Madrid have announced that they have already ‘initiated the procedures’ to contest the signing, effectively taking Barcelona to court.

‘Atlético de Madrid believes that the termination of the contract happened before the end of the last season due to facts, acts and demonstrations made by the player, and therefore has already initiated the procedures it has deemed appropriate to protect their rights and lawful interests.’
