Atletico Madrid targeting Napoli’s prolific forward

Atletico Madrid are planning a move for Napoli forward Dries Mertens next summer.

Madrid are preparing for the departures of Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco.

The French forward has a €100million release clause his current contract.

Griezmann to go?

Antoine Griezmann is a key figure at the Wanda Metropolitano and his departure would be huge.

Therefore, the club from the Spanish capital are lining up replacements should that be the case.

The 26-year-old currently has a €100million release clause his contract.

Manchester United have been strongly linked with the forward in the past and are expected to return.

Real Madrid could also be a potential destination, with Los Blancos searching for their next Galactico.

Atleti believe that Griezmann’s departure could come sometime after the 2018 World Cup.

Carrasco’s potential departure

Reports in Spain suggest that Carrasco’s relationship with his teammates has deteriorated.

This has meant that the Belgian is looking to leave the Spanish capital in the near future.

The 24-year-old has become one of Madrid’s best players since his arrival in 2015 from Monaco.

Belgian replacement

Atletico Madrid are understood to be targeting a move for prolific Napoli forward Dries Mertens.

Madrid see Mertens as a perfect player fit replace either Griezmann or Carrasco due to his versatility.

Mertens on fire

Last season, Mertens proved a revelation spearheading Napoli’s attack following the departure of Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus.

Manager Maurizio Sarri moved Mertens from playing as a wide forward to playing as an out-and-out striker.

Subsequently, the 30-year-old enjoyed his most fruitful season of his career scoring 28 league goals in 35 games – one short of top scorer Edin Dzeko.

Mertens and his Napoli teammates have hit scintillating form so far this season, as they lead Serie A, currenlty yet to lose a game.

This could fianlly be the year Partenopei win their third Scudetto, but are being hottly pursused by Juve, Inter and Roma.
