As per a report from Spanish outlet AS, Atletico Madrid are sweating over the fitness of as many as 7 key players, ahead of the club’s meeting with Liverpool next week.
Atleti host Liverpool
Diego Simeone’s men are set to welcome the European champions to the Wanda Metropolitano a week from today.
The clash will come as the first of two between the clubs, as the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League get underway.
Liverpool will understandably head into the tie as clear favourites to advance, not only due to the Reds’ sensational form to this point in the campaign, but also Atletico’s struggles.
Despite the relative inconsistencies of both Barcelona and Real Madrid thus far this season, the Rojiblancos currently sit a hefty 13 points off the La Liga summit.
They were also ousted from the Copa del Rey by minnows Cultural Leonesa, and are currently in the midst of a streak of just 1 win from the club’s last 6 across all competitions.
Simeone’s personnel headache
And, if the latest speculation stemming from Spain today proves to be accurate, then Atleti’s hopes of turning their fortunes around with a surprise win over Liverpool next week now look slimmer than ever.
As per the aforementioned report from AS, as many as 7 important members of Diego Simeone’s squad are viewed as either doubtful to feature in, or have been entirely ruled out of next Tuesday’s showdown.
The individuals viewed as questionable as things stand are as follows:
Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata, Joao Felix, Hector Herrera, Santiago Arias and Jose Gimenez.
Former Tottenham full-back Kieran Trippier, meanwhile, is certain to miss out.
