Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings opens up on mental health struggles due to Euro 2020

Tyrone Mings’ Euro 2020

Tyrone Mings was named as one of the 26-man squad taken to Euro 2020 by Gareth Southgate, after a stellar campaign with Aston Villa.

In all honesty, few likely viewed the defender as one of England’s main centre-backs ahead of the tournament, with Harry Maguire and John Stones having instead been expected to form the pairing in front of Jordan Pickford.

However, Maguire was injured at the back end of 2020/21, and whilst he was nevertheless taken to the tournament, the Manchester United man was not fit enough to start the first few games.

This led to Mings being handed a starting berth next to Stones in England’s opening two group outings, versus Croatia and Scotland.

And, to his credit, the stopper proved a cool, composed presence at the back, playing a key role in the Three Lions keeping two clean sheets.

Mings’ mental health struggles

Maguire then took the reins as Stones’ partner from the 3rd group game through to the final, but Mings’ efforts should of course still be appreciated.

Now, the Aston Villa star himself has opened up on the mental health struggles he faced both ahead of and during Euro 2020, explaining that:

‘I did have a tough time in the lead-up to the opening game against Croatia.

‘I think I’m a lot more hardened to outside influences now, but my mental health did plummet. And I have no shame in admitting that because there were so many unknowns about me going to that game.

‘I was probably the only name on the team sheet that people thought, ‘not sure about him’. And that was something I had to overcome.

‘So I did a lot of work on that with my psychologist. I was given a lot of coping mechanisms – whether it was breathing, meditation, or just learning how to bring yourself into the present moment. To stop letting your subconscious take over.

‘It was hard. I didn’t really sleep very well before that first game.’

Mings also opened up on a text message he received from Rio Ferdinand following the tournament, after the ex-defender had previously singled him out as a weak point ahead of England’s meeting with Croatia:

‘Rio DM’d me after the tournament. He’d said I was the weak link, and that Croatia should be targeting me.

‘He messaged me saying something like,’Top-class response – matched your performances on the pitch.’ What a lovely guy.

‘It’s just great that we are playing in a time now when you can speak about mental health, and how you are feeling.’
