Aston Villa vs West Brom prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

The Championship play-offs have thrown up a West Midlands Derby.

The meetings of Aston Villa and West Brom this season saw a 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns and a 2-0 win for the Baggies at Villa Park.

These two finished 4th and 5th in the Championship, just 6 points apart.

This is a tough tie to call between two of England’s great clubs.

Aston Villa vs West Bromwich Albion: Match preview

Will Aston Villa prevail in the play-offs this time?

Last year, they defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 at this stage before losing by the same scoreline to Fulham at Wembley.

Since then, a lot has changed.

Steve Bruce was sacked in October with Dean Smith taking over and what an impact he’s made.

They were 15th when he was appointed but 17 wins, 11 draws and just 7 defeats later, they’re in the play-offs.

That included a club record breaking 11 wins in a row between 2 March and 22 April.

Their league season ended with that bizarre 1-1 draw at Elland Road and a 2-1 defeat to the Champions Norwich City last Sunday.

Nevertheless, they come into this one full of optimism that their two year stay in the Championship will come to an end.

At no point in this tie should Villa fans give up.

Thats because their team won 29 points from losing positions this season, 5 more than the next most.

They fought back 17 out of a possible 26 times and, without those points, they would have finished just five points above the drop zone.

Will they have too much for West Brom?

Baggies bouncing back into the Premier League?

As for West Brom, it’s been a very strange season for the Baggies.

Darren Moore was sacked as Head Coach on 9 March despite the fact they were fourth in the table.

James Shan remains in caretaker charge and they have not moved from fourth place under his stewardship.

He has won 6 of his 10 games in charge losing just 3 times.

One of those defeats did come last weekend though when they lost 3-1 at Derby County.

Nevertheless, it’s been a very good first season back in the Championship for them but the owners are demanding promotion.

Will they leave Villa Park with something to hold onto in next Tuesday’s second leg?

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND – MAY 15: Jack Grealish of Aston Villa is seen at the full time whistle as fans invade the pitch during the Sky Bet Championship Play Off Semi Final second leg match between Aston Villa and Middlesbrough at Villa Park on May 15, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

Dean Smith has an array of options to choose from ahead of this match.

In goal Jed Steer will start.

He is keeping Croatia’s number 1 Lovre Kalinić on the bench right now.

Ahmed Elmohamady will come back in for Alan Hutton at right-back.

James Chester is out due to a knee inflammation.

So, it’s likely to be Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings at centre-back.

John McGinn and Conor Hourihane will make up the midfield duo in this 4-2-3-1.

Ahead of them, Jack Grealish was rested last weekend but will come back in for Henri Lansbury.

Anwar El Ghazi had his red card at Leeds rescinded so is available to play out wide.

Up front, despite scoring last weekend, Jonathan Kodjia it likely to be back on the bench.

That’s because Tammy Abraham, who’s scored 25 goals this season, is the main man in this team.

However, Villa’s bench could play a pivotal role.

They’ve scored 12 goals from substitutes this season more than anybody else in the division.

On that bench will be players such as Birkir Bjarnason, Andre Green, Keinan Davis and the afore mentioned Kodija.

Does this side have enough to defeat West Brom?

As for West Brom, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will be up against the side he was playing for last season.

Ahead of him will be a back 3.

It’ll be the same trio of Kyle Bartley, Ahmed Hegazi and Craig Dawson that started last weekend.

Manchester City loanee Tosin Adarabioyo will miss out.

Kieran Gibbs and Mason Holgate will be the wing-backs.

In midfield, Jake Livermore is suspended.

Without him, their midfield will be Chris Brunt, Stefan Johansen and 19 year old Rakeem Harper who’s started the last 4 games.

Up front will be their deadly duo.

Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez have 23 and 22 goals respectively this season.

Can they add to those here?

Hal Robson-Kanu was sent off in the 93rd minute last weekend and is suspended for both legs of the semi-final and the final should they get there.

Madness.

They also have a strong bench.

Players like Matt Phillips, Gareth Barry, Jefferson Montero and Jacob Murphy will all be hoping to make an impact as substitutes.
