A disastrous afternoon for Aston Villa.

On Saturday, they hosted Southampton in a crunch match as both clubs went into it level on points.

However, it was clear that this was not going to remain the case as Southampton raced into a 3-0 lead in just 53 minutes.

Jack Grealish did pull one back but, by then, his side had already been condemned to a damaging defeat.

That means Dean Smith’s side drop into the relegation zone for the first time since September following four consecutive loses.

Just 48 hours after this one, they travel to Watford to take on the other member of the bottom three.

Thus, it is vital that the Villans get not one but two positive results in their next two matches against their direct rivals.

They lost both meetings with Norwich in the Championship this season so will it be repeat or revenge in the second city?

Will Norwich be celebrating at Villa Park again?

As for Norwich, they too were beaten at home last weekend.

The Canaries actually took an early lead through Todd Cantwell against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Daniel Farke’s side then missed numerous chances to extend their lead and were punished.

Wolves scored twice in the second half to leave Carrow Road with all three points.

That means the Canaries have only won one of their last 13 matches and remain 19th in the table.

Despite Saturday’s events, Norwich’s main issue has been leaking goals rather than scoring them.

So far, on average, Norwich are facing 6.1 shots on target per game.

Since 2003/04, the 14 clubs to have faced 6+ shots on target per game across an entire Premier League campaign have all been relegated.

Every statistic points to the fact that Norwich are in trouble.

After this, they welcome Tottenham on Saturday before matches against Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Bournemouth and Spurs again.

Thus, it is vital they do not leave Villa Park empty handed.

Aston Villa’s recent plight has largely been due to injuries to key players.

There was then even more bad news for Dean Smith at the weekend.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton is likely to be busy once again.

That’s because star defender Tyrone Mings is still out but could be back in the next week or two.

In his absence, Björn Engels will continue to be partnered by Kortney Hause at centre-back.

Full-backs, Frédéric Guilbert and Matt Targett were both poor on Saturday so Smith could be tempted to bring in Ahmed Elmohamady and Neil Taylor for them respectively.

In midfield is where they’re without another key man.

John McGinn went off just seven minutes in at the weekend and is expected to be out for the next three months.

A massive blow that could see Villa restructure their midfield.

Marvelous Nakamba and Conor Hourihane will play the deeper roles with Douglas Luiz left out.

Further forward, without McGinn, Jack Grealish could come inside to his preferred number ten role.

Despite being shunted out-wide, Grealish has been directly involved in more Premier League goals than any other English midfielder this season with five goals and four assists.

Grealish moving would allow for two out-and-out wingers.

Anwar El Ghazi will continue on the right with Trézéguet coming in on the other side; Jota is the other option.

Up front, Wesley will keep his place ahead of Carabao Cup hat-trick hero Jonathan Kodjia who will once again be left in reserve.

Will this depleted side secure a massive victory for Villa?

Norwich City team news vs Aston Villa

As for Norwich City, they too have been plagued with injuries which has really hindered their top-flight return.

Only two goalkeepers have conceded more goals than Tim Krul this season but the Dutchman has made the fourth most saves.

In defence, star centre-back Ben Godfrey has joined Timm Klose on the long-term treatment table.

So, club captain Grant Hanley continues to deputise alongside Christoph Zimmermann.

At full-back, Max Aarons will continue on the right with Jamal Lewis likely to displace Sam Byram on the other side.

In midfield is where Farke has an array of options, thus is not adverse to tinkering.

However, he’s expected to stick with the central trio of Alex Tettey, Tom Trybull and Kenny McLean.

Mario Vrančić, Ibrahim Amadou and Marco Stiepermann are the other options.

Out-wide, Emi Buendía and Todd Cantwell’s respective recent good form will see them both start.

The latter has been directly involved in 7 Premier League goals this season (5 goals & 2 assists), more than twice as many as in the Championship last season (3; 1 goal & 2 assists).

Thus, Onel Hernández will be back on the bench.

Up front, there’s only one man and that’s Teemu Pukki.

He has scored nine of Norwich 19 goals this season so can the Finn fire his side to three points?
