Aston Villa boss Dean Smith provides squad update ahead of Spurs

Dean Smith has provided a fitness update on Aston Villa’s squad, ahead of the club’s meeting with Tottenham.

Aston Villa vs Spurs

The Villans are set to return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon, following a 2-week winter break.

Dean Smith’s men will head into proceedings versus Spurs hoping to get their form back on track.

After picking up 4 points from a pair of crunch fixtures with fellow relegation-battlers Brighton and Watford, Villa were put to the sword by Bournemouth in their last outing.

Despite Mbwana Samatta’s debut strike, a pair of first-half Cherries strikes eventually proved too much for the visitors to overcome at the Vitality Stadium.

Villa’s latest defeat means that the Claret and Blue are set to head into Sunday’s meeting with Spurs teetering precariously 1 point clear of the relegation zone.

Villa latest

And, speaking ahead of his side’s latest crucial outing in their bid to maintain top-flight status, Dean Smith this afternoon provided a fitness update on his squad.

The focus of the Lions boss surrounded a trio of players, namely Ezri Konsa, John McGinn and Keinan Davis.

First, Smith confirmed that Konsa, who limped off versus Bournemouth two weeks ago, is fit to feature:

‘He felt something in his thigh at half-time so we brought him off, but he had three or four days off and then he came back in and he’s been back training ever since.’

‘So he’s fine and he’s fit.’

John McGinn, meanwhile, is inching towards a return to the pitch, but will not recover from his long-term ankle injury in time to face Spurs:

‘I think it’ll be a week or two later than that, but it won’t be for the want of trying with John.’

Finally, young striker Keinan Davis has suffered a setback in his road back to first-team duties, having been forced off with a hamstring complaint whilst playing for Villa’s Under-23s.
