As Man United and City fans go back to work on Monday morning, more stories are coming out explaining how the Red Devils won the derby on Saturday.
At halftime at the Etihad it was impossible to see past a City win.
Knowing victory would have sown up the title, City took a 2-nil lead into the break after Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan found the target.
But then United hit back in the second half. Paul Pogba scored a double, before Chris Smalling volleyed home the winner.
Ashley Young’s Man United halftime team talk
What happened in the Man United dressing room at the break?
According to the Times on Monday morning, Ashley Young played a key role in getting United back on track.
Young gave a rousing halftime speech in the locker room his his teammates. As reported in the Times:
With United 2-0 down and being outplayed in all departments, Young took it upon himself to galvanise his team-mates and stop them from slipping to a defeat that would have handed City the title.
“The City fans are shouting ‘Olé’ and they’re embarrassing us. Are we going to stand for that?” Young is understood to have said. “Remember your responsibilities to the fans and the badge. Show some pride and fight for each other.”
The Times also note that Michael Carrick spoke up in the United locker room too at the interval.
Ashley Young vs Sergio Aguero
Man City fans believed they should have won a penalty against United.
Argentine international striker Sergio Aguero came on as a second half sub for Man City.
It was Aguero’s first match back after several weeks out through injury.
Man City fans couldn’t believe that Aguero never won a penalty when he was taken out in the box by Ashley Young.
Young caught Aguero with a horrible foul on his left leg. Kun was clearly caught, and the penalty should have been awarded.
Moreover, Young could easily have been sent off for a dangerous tackle.
Yet referee Martin Atkinson not only didn’t book Young. No penalty was awarded either.
