Mesut Ozil 1 – Newcastle 0
Arsenal returned to winnings ways in the Premier League thanks to a 1-0 win over Newcastle.
It wasn’t amazingly convincing by Arsenal but they bagged another three points at the Emirates and moved back into the top four.
The only goal of the game was a terrific finish from Mesut Ozil, who cracked home the winner from a half cleared corner.
It was not only the goal that impressed Arsenal fans today, Ozil was undoubtedly the best of the Gunners’ three main attackers.
Whilst Alexandre Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez were poor, Ozil was full of running and continued to press Newcastle even in the final minutes of the game.
Mesut Ozil to Barcelona or Manchester United?
It seems likely that Mesut Ozil would have been the centre of attention even had the German playmaker not been out of contract at the end of the season.
After all, Ozil scored the Arsenal winner at Newcastle.
Ozil has been linked with both Barcelona and Manchester United in the last few months.
It is entirely possible that one of Barcelona or Manchester United make a move for Ozil in January.
Whilst Ozil would not be available to sign in January for free, the German World Cup winner would come at a cut price fee.
Arsene Wenger talks extensively about Mesut Ozil
On Mesut Ozil’s goal, Arsene Wenger said: “It’s superb, he can deliver that. It’s important for him that he takes the risk to do what he did. Usually he is a guy who, 99 per cent of the time, in this position, he controls the ball and gives it to somebody else, so I’m pleased he took the gamble to finish and I’m happy as well that he scored a very important goal.”
Whilst Wenger was also asked if Ozil might still stay at Arsenal and sign a new contract.
To which Wenger gave the most bizarre of answers: “I’m confident, yes, but what does that mean? I don’t know.”
