Arsene Wenger says European Super League would destroy PL advantage / Arteta coy on proposal following reported Arsenal approach

Money over competition

News recently surfaced that both Manchetser United and Liverpool are in talks to be founders of a European Premier League backed by FIFA. With the support of almost $6 billion from American bank JP Morgan, it appears that the league is inching ever closer.

Former Arsenal manager turned FIFA employee Arsene Wenger has mused as to why European clubs are so keen. The Frenchman has broken down how the league would effectively remove the Premier League’s advantage:

“The Premier League has a superiority. Project Big Picture wanted to reinforce this superiority. The other leagues try to destroy the advantage the Premier League has,” said Wenger.

“For them, the best thing to attain that is to create a European League. So that means to destroy the Premier League, basically. So if they get the agreement from the big English clubs, it will happen.”

Whilst competitively, a ‘super league’ may close the gap between English clubs and Europe’s elite, Wenger feels that this is in fact not the main motivation for the sides involved:

“We are in a period of owners who are investors. What is investors’ first target? To make more money. So that European Super League is maybe one way to make more money.”

Arsene to Arteta

The former Arsenal manager is of course able to speak freely about the European Premier League’s prospects. However, the Gunners’ current coach is much more coy. Speaking last week ahead of his side’s Europa League meeting with Rapid Vienna, Mikel Arteta explained:

“I don’t know, it’s like a new format is coming out every three or four days. I think there will be more coming out very soon. Again, I ask for some unity here, to defend the interest of everybody like it’s been the case in the UK. I think that has made this league so unique.”

“These things have to evolve in one way or another, but let’s try to do it together to find the right solution.”

It appears from the Spaniard’s assessment that, if a super league is to be created, he would want to be part of it. Arsenal have been without Champions League football, and the financial support that comes with it, for a number of seasons now. A continental league, though, would certainly boost the club’s financial muscle.
