Wenger praises Xhaka
On the 20th anniversary of the day that he became Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger was full of praise for Gunners midfielder Granit Xhaka. The Switzerland international arrived in the summer after a big money move from Borussia Monchengladbach. He’s impressed despite not being a regular starter in the early days of his Arsenal career.
Wenger said that the reason for his rationed game time wasn’t anything to do with his quality. He wants to give Xhaka time to adapt to the pace of the English game. He also wants to test out pairs in midfield: “Every week, he is stronger and better and I think he will have a huge impact as a player. He has the stature, he has the power. What we want to do is use that in an efficient way.”
The French coach said that he prefers Xhaka as a box-to-box midfielder: “He has the engine, the power, the long pass. He likes to come deep and distribute the game. I think he has the engine to impact the game with his runs.” Hear all of Wenger’s comments about Xhaka and the Arsenal midfield below.
