Arsene Wenger claims Arsenal tried to extend Serge Gnabry’s contract ‘for a very long time’

Gnabry shining for Bayern

Serge Gnabry would join German giants FC Bayern Munich in July of 2017, moving from Werder Bremen.

Bayern are believed to have paid around £7.2m for Gnabry’s services.

Since joining Bayern, Gnabry has featured 51 times. In those 51 outings, the winger has netted 18 and provided 13 assists.

Four of those 18 goals would come vs Tottenham in the Champions League on October 1st.

Bayern demolished the north London outfit, coming away with a 7-2 victory.

Gnabry & Arsenal

After showcasing his talents on the European stage against their bitterest rivals, Arsenal fans are probably quite upset that they sold Gnabry to Werder Bremen in 2016.

However, Arsene Wenger, who was still Arsenal’s boss when Gnabry was sold, has recently, in an interview with beIN SPORTS, claimed that the Gunners tried to extend Gnabry’s contract for a very long time.

Wenger also spoke about Gnabry’s loan to West Brom, and how his confidence was destroyed:

“We tried to extend his contract for a very long time and I think that Bayern manipulated behind the scenes, that if he went to Bremen he would join Bayern after.

“He was always a very talented boy who lacked confidence in some stages, but we always thought we had a player who could achieve a lot.

“He came back from a very bad experience at West Brom where his confidence was destroyed. I tried to rebuild him because I believed in him.” As quoted by beIN SPORTS.
