Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu reveals which club he rejected on transfer deadline day

Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu reveals which club he rejected on transfer deadline day

One in, one out on deadline day

It proved a busy deadline day on the red half of north London this summer, as one right-back departed and another arrived in the final hours of the transfer window.

Hector Bellerin made the move to Real Betis on loan, leaving Edu Gaspar and Mikel Arteta free to finalise a move for Japan and Bologna right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu, their sixth, and final, summer addition.

The Japanese defender has already become a firm fan favourite, too, forming part of a new-look Arsenal defence that boasts the second-best record in the Premier League, while his physical attributes add some much-needed power and pace to the Gunners’ side.

Tomiyasu’s addition to the side has coincided with the nine-game unbeaten run that Mikel Arteta and co. currently find themselves on, and while he will continue to be tested by stronger sides, the 22-year-old is so far proving himself fully worthy of a starting berth.

Tomiyasu reveals he rejected Spurs on deadline day

Now, speaking to Japanese TV, Tomiyasu has revealed that he rejected Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day, something that will endear him even further to the Arsenal faithful. The defender said:

“I thought I wasn’t able to join Arsenal. I thought I was going to Spurs. On Deadline Day, I rejected them. Arsenal asked me to join them and I did immediately.”

Tottenham ended up opting for Emerson Royal, while Tomiyasu joined the Gunners. Looking at how things have gone since, it is safe to say that, early doors, Mikel Arteta and co. got the better deal.
