Port Adelaide confirm Arsenal signing of Darren Burgess
On Sunday, reports in the Adelaide press confirmed that Arsenal had made a key signing, albeit not one that will make a direct impact on the pitch.
One of the most highly respected fitness coaches has joined Arsenal and it suggests that Ivan Gazidis and perhaps Arsene Wenger were not happy with how their side performed last season.
In recent hours, Port Adelaide have confirmed that Darren Burgess will be joining Arsenal.
Generally, this news has been received well by Arsenal fans who were promised some change after Arsene Wenger signed a new two-year deal at the club.
Port Adelaide reveal terms of Darren Burgess release
AFL team Port Adelaide have revealed the terms of Darren Burgess’ release, and they are far from simple.
Burgess will start his new role at Arsenal in July but will return to Adelaide later that month.
The “fitness master” who previously worked at Liverpool and with the Australia national team will also return to Oz in October and November.
Port Adelaide set for global partnership with Arsenal
The lengthy Port Adelaide statement on Burgess joining Arsenal also adds that the AFL side will “pursue an arrangement with Arsenal – one of the UK’s biggest football clubs – to grow sports science and professional development opportunties between Highbury and Alberton.”
Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis is expected to wrap up this deal in late July.
On moving to Arsenal, Burgess said: “The opportunity to return to the English Premier League and work at one of the world’s most successful sporting organisations in Arsenal is an opportunity I simply couldn’t refuse.”
Burgess added: “I look forward to continue having a relationship with Port Adelaide from afar and thank the entire club for their support and many great memories over two stints.”
