Mustafi’s time at Arsenal
Shkodran Mustafi would join Arsenal in 2016 from Valencia.
The Gunners are believed to have paid around £36m for the German’s services.
However, despite costing Arsenal a fair chunk of change, Mustafi hasn’t always been the most reliable of defenders.
Mustafi was rather uninspiring last campaign, with his poor display in Arsenal’s 3-2 loss vs Crystal Palace a particular highlight.
Mustafi on criticism
Mustafi would then be linked with a move away from Arsenal over the summer.
However, the defender would remain at the Emirates, and now he has spoken out about the criticism that he gets.
Mustafi believes that the criticism has become irrational, and claims he was, at one point, blamed for a defeat in a game he did not play in:
“I was out injured for three weeks and went into the game [against Liverpool, in December 2018] without training with the team because the coach needed me. It was 1-4 at half-time, I didn’t look good and injured myself again.
“Afterwards, I got a lot of negative comments from Arsenal fans on Instagram and Twitter and was harshly criticised in articles. I’m self-critical enough to realise that I made mistakes [against Liverpool and a 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace]. I can also deal with tough criticism.
“But the criticism has become escalated and irrational. I have become a target. At one point, people even blamed me for a defeat in a game I had not played in.” As quoted by the Evening Standard.
Mustafi has played in three games so far this season for the Gunners, two in the Europa League and one in the League Cup. Arsenal have kept clean sheets in all of those ties.
