Arsenal’s Mat Ryan issues apology to Brighton fans after transfer comments deemed as insulting
Arsenal loanee Mat Ryan has issued a public apology to Brighton’s fans, after comments on the part of the shot-stopper on the back of his move to the Emirates were deemed as insulting.
Arsenal switch
Ryan was of course one of a pair of January loan additions to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Ahead of the more high-profile arrival of Martin Odegaard, goalkeeper Ryan was brought in from Premier League rivals Brighton, to reinforce the Gunners’ options between the posts.
This came with summer signing Alex Runarsson having majorly disappointed across limited minutes over the first half of the campaign.
Ryan has since gone on to notch a solitary appearance for Arsenal, impressing despite an eventual defeat at the hands of Aston Villa two weeks ago.

‘Never my intention’
As outlined above, however, whilst his limited time on the pitch since making the move to the capital has proven of a positive nature, things away from the pitch have not been quite as smooth for Ryan.
This comes with the Australian international having been singled out for heavy criticism from certain sections of the Brighton faithful, who deemed their former no.1’s comments regarding the club on the back of his departure to have been disrespectful.
The comments in question saw Ryan explain:
‘(When I joined) I had in my mind a little bit of a plan that I wanted to play a couple of seasons at Brighton and try and do well and hopefully be bought by a bigger club and keep progressing in my career.’
‘Perhaps it didn’t work out in the way of playing two, three seasons and then being bought for a fee as. No.1 and going and playing. But one way or another I’ve obviously ended up in a massive step up from Brighton and to another level of football.’

The Arsenal loanee, though, has since moved to set the record straight.
Ryan was evidently made aware of the criticism aimed in his direction by his parent club’s fans this week, and has subsequently opted to issue a public apology.
The Aussie has assured that insulting Brighton & Hove Albion was ‘never his intention’, before assuring that the Seagulls will ‘always have a special place’ in his heart:
‘Hey mate, it’s been brought to my attention that there’s been a few people who’ve been upset/disappointed with some comments I’ve made in this interview and I want to apologise to anyone who has felt I’ve been disrespectful towards the club.’
‘This was not and never will be my intention. I recognise how people could have interpreted that through those comments and moving forward I’ll be sure to pay extra attention as to how I refer to the club to not have the same outcome.’
‘The club (Brighton) will always have a special place in my heart as I said and I’ve got nothing but fond memories and wish all the best to you all for the remainder of the season and I’ll continue to support the club because of our experiences together.’
