Arsenal’s Guendouzi escapes punishment following Maupay incident vs Brighton

Matteo Guendouzi

Matteo Guendouzi will not face a ban for his altercation with Neal Maupay during Arsenal’s defeat to Brighton, it has been confirmed.

Arsenal downed

Mikel Arteta’s men visited the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon, for the club’s first outing since March.

The Gunners headed into proceedings aware that nothing but a win would suffice, to ensure the club’s slim Champions League ambitions remained at least somewhat alive.

Brighton, meanwhile, were winless since the turn of the year, and hovering precariously above the relegation zone, ahead of kick-off.

When all was said and done at the Amex, though, Graham Potter’s men defied the odds, to deal a potentially fatal blow to Arsenal’s European hopes.

The visitors actually took the lead in the clash, when Nicolas Pepe bent a sumptuous effort into the top-right corner of the Brighton net.

The Seagulls, though, quickly hit back, as a scramble in the away box fifteen minutes from time eventually saw Lewis Dunk poke home from close range.

And, incredibly, just when the matchup looked set to peter out into a draw, Brighton went on to bag an all-important winner, courtesy of Neal Maupay.

‘No further action’ for Guendouzi

Maupay’s last-gasp strike, though, while obviously leading to wild celebrations on the part of the hosts, also resulted in tensions boiling over following the full-time whistle.

This came with a number of Arsenal’s stars still angry with Brighton’s match-winner following a coming together with Bernd Leno during the first-half, which resulted in the German being stretchered off.

It was Matteo Guendouzi, though, who allowed his emotions to get the better of him, with the Frenchman having first flicked a subtle arm into Maupay’s mid-section, before grabbing his fellow countryman by the throat following the full-time whistle.

Guendouzi’s actions, meanwhile, had since resulted in understandable speculation that the Arsenal midfielder may be set for a retrospective ban for his actions.

As outlined above, however, somewhat surprisingly, word has this evening arrived that Guendouzi has escaped FA punishment.

This comes with the incident between he and Maupay having been ‘reviewed by VAR at the time’:
