Arsenal’s Brazilian duo invite Oscar to the Gunners

Brazilian core

Since the appointment of ‘invincible’ Edu Gaspar as technical director, the number of Brazilian players at Arsenal has grown significantly.

Gabriel Martinelli joined the Gunners from his homeland for a meagre £6 million fee. Shortly followed by Chelsea veteran David Luiz.

Fast-forward to the summer window of 2020 and the number of Brazilians has doubled. Chelsea’s Willian refused a two-year contract offer to join Arsenal. The £27 million signing of Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes followed.

Edu’s faith in his countryman has been rewarded. Martinelli is seen as one of the Premier League’s most exciting talents. David Luiz was integral to Arsenal’s FA Cup victory after standout performances against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Arsenal’s opening day win at Fulham was filled with further justification for Edu. Willian starred and produced a creative display culminating in 2 assists. Gabriel started and scored a debut goal amongst a commanding defensive display.

It is no wonder that Arsenal are further linked with Brazilian talent to bolster a budding squad.

Oscar got the call

In an interview with Fox Sports Brasil, Brazilian midfielder Oscar revealed he had been contacted by Arsenal duo David Luiz and Willian.

“They called me. They said come to Arsenal, come here.”

“But for me it’s a little more difficult. I have a contract with Shanghai, it’s a little more difficult to leave. Willian had finished the contract.”

“I was happy that they got together again. And happy that Willian is happy.”

With Arsenal on the lookout for a creative midfielder it was likely a plethora of names would arise. However, were Oscar to make the move to the Emirates it would be surprising.

Arsenal’s top creative target has been Lyon’s Houssem Auoar. With an initial bid rejected by the French side, alternative options may need to be considered.

However, a focus on youth is emanating from the Gunners, this may then deter Arsenal’s recruitment team from approaching now 29-year-old Oscar.

Therefore, David Luiz and Willian may end up disappointed not to see their former Chelsea colleague mirror their careers.
