Arsenal’s Bernd Leno talks to Sport Bild
Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno has given a new interview with Germany’s Sport Bild.
Leno has been Arsenal’s ever-present in goal in the Premier League since an early-season injury to Petr Cech.
Yet many are still questioning just how good Leno is.
Arsenal have repeatedly struggled to keep clean sheets in the league.
While Leno can be given leeway in his first season at Arsenal, especially considering Arsenal’s defensive issues this year, many are waiting to be impressed.
Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha in Germany
One of the main topic of conversation in Leno’s interview with Sport Bild was the difference between football in Germany and England.
The Arsenal goalie compared the quality in the Premier League and Bundesliga:
Every game here is difficult. I’d really like to know how a team like Crystal Palace would fare in the Bundesliga with top players like Wilfried Zaha or Andros Townsend.
Zaha has been linked with a possible move from Crystal Palace to Borussia Dortmund in recent days.
Leno complains about referees
The Arsenal keeper vented about the state of refereeing in the Premier League:
Everything here is much more physical. The referees let the game run much more here than they do in the Bundesliga or even in international games.
As a goalkeeper, you have have no protection in England. Therefore, you have to acquire tremendous toughness.
No matter how you approach it, you always have to assume that nothing gets whistled.
Since I’ve come to England, I haven’t seen a goalkeeper win a single free kick inside the penalty area. That’s a big difference.
