As per a report from Italian outlet Radio Sei, Premier League giants Arsenal are keen to seal a deal for free agent Gelson Martins as quickly as possible.
Martins, a 23-year-old Portuguese international, came up through the youth ranks at Sporting CP, before breaking into the club’s first-team setup in 2015.
After struggling for game-time during his debut campaign with the Leões, Martins established himself as a key contributor for the club during the 2016-17 season, racking up 6 goals and 9 assists in 32 league outings.
And, after playing a starring role once again this past season (13 goals and 13 assists across all competitions), the blistering wide-man has since been heavily linked with a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
All of Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United, Everton and Juventus have been named as admirers of Martins’ talents, with previous reports having even claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo was pushing the board at the Bernabeu to splash out on his fellow countryman.
And, after Martins became the latest Sporting star to file to have his contract with the Portuguese giants terminated following the fan attack on the club’s players and staff last month, interest in his signature has only increased.
Serie A outfit Lazio have been named as the newest contenders for Martins over the last couple of days, with the Biancocelesti targeting the pacy wide-man to replace Felipe Anderson, who looks set to join West Ham.
Italian outlet Radio Sei provided an update on Lazio’s chase of Martins a short time ago, with the report having claimed that, while the Roman outfit are pushing hard for the Portuguese international’s signature with the help of super-agent Jorge Mendes, Simone Inzaghi’s men are aware that Arsenal are also making concrete moves for Martins.
Radio Sei claim that the Gunners want to wrap up a deal for the free agent winger ‘as soon as possible’, as Unai Emery continues to shape the squad whom he will guide into his first campaign at the helm in North London.
