Arsenal vs Qarabag Europa League match preview

Arsenal host Azerbaijani side FK Qarabag at the Emirates on Thursday night in their final Europa League Group E match.

The Gunners head into the final match as group leaders, level on points with Sporting. Arsenal have a better head-to-head record over the Portuguese side. Arsenal, therefore, only need to match Sporting’s result against Vorskla in order to secure top spot.

Arsenal beat Vorskla 3-0 in their last Europa League outing. Emile Smith Rowe, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Willock all got their names on the scoresheet.

The Gunners extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 21 matches on Saturday with a narrow 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town. A late overhead kick from Lucas Torreira sealed three points for the Gunners, which leaves them level on points with fourth-place Chelsea.

Torreira is in superb form, having picked up the man of the match award four times in his last six matches. The Uruguayan is unlikely to feature at all on Thursday.

Arsenal won 3-0 win the sides last met in October. Sokratis, Smith Rowe and Guendouzi all netted their first goals for the club.

Qarabag have scored 11 goals in their last two matches and are currently 2nd in the Azerbaijan Premyer Liqa. Gurban Gurbanov’s side are already eliminated from the competition.

The draw for the last 32 – which will include the likes of Napoli and Inter Milan – will take place on 17 December.

Arsenal team news vs Qarabag

Although top spot is not yet assured, Unai Emery has little reason to play a strong side on Thursday.

The Spaniard does have some big decisions to make in defence, however. Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos are both suspended for Sunday’s match at Southampton, so they could start at centre-back.

Having only just returned from a serious Achilles injury, Emery is unlikely to risk Laurent Koscielny from the start. Fellow centre-backs Rob Holding and Konstantinos Mavropanos remain sidelined.

With Stephen Lichtsteiner required at centre-back for the weekend, Carl Jenkinson will likely start at right-back on Thursday. Ainsley Maitland-Niles may start at left-back to give Monreal a rest before the weekend.

Youngster Joe Willock, Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe should all start. The Gunners fielded seven teenagers in their last Europa League match, a trend that is set to continue.

Mesut Ozil is set to miss out again with a back injury while Danny Welbeck is a long-term injury absentee. Aaron Ramsey is also injured.

Petr Cech should captain the side with Bernd Leno being given the night off.
