EL showdown

Mikel Arteta’s men are of course in the midst of an absolutely crucial stretch of the club’s campaign.

Having long seen their hopes of success on the domestic front go up in smoke, the Gunners have switched their focus firmly to matters on the continent.

In turn, Arsenal made the trip to Spain last Thursday night, for the first-leg of their Europa League semi-final showdown with Villarreal.

A concerning display eventually saw the north Londoners condemned to a deserved defeat. Nicolas Pepe’s late away goal, though, could yet prove crucial in guiding Arteta and co. beyond Villarreal and former boss Unai Emery.

The return leg is set to take place at the Emirates in two days’ time, with Arsenal’s season, all told, essentially on the line.

In turn, it will no doubt come as a timely boost for the Gunners faithful to hear of positive news stemming from the club’s training ground on Tuesday.

Both Alexandre Lacazette and Kieran Tierney have of course long been viewed as doubts to feature in the 2nd-leg meeting with Villarreal, after picking up respective fitness problems.

When drawn on the wellbeing of the pair ahead of Arsenal’s weekend meeting with Newcastle, meanwhile, Mikel Arteta provided a concerning update, explaining:

‘They haven’t trained with us yet. So it’s unlikely we’ll have them ready in the next few games.’
