Arsenal-linked Dominik Szoboszlai hits screamer in Champions League opener but Salzburg drop valuable points

Hungarian thunderbolt

There has always been something special about talents produced and developed in Salzburg. The likes of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Dayot Upamecano to name but a few have passed through the club’s exit doors.

The latest talent garnering widespread interest, meanwhile, is Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai. The youngster is set to turn twenty later this month, and got an early birthday present of his own making in Salzburg’s opening Champions League group stage fixture:

The midfielder’s strike highlighted once again Szoboszlai’s hammer of a right foot – Similar to the free-kick he converted for Hungary from even further out:

Arsenal were of course heavily linked with Lyon’s Houssem Aouar this past summer, but have also been touted to move for Szoboszlai as an alternative target.

Points dropped

Red Bull Salzburg’s socially-distanced fans in the ground loved their Hungarian talent’s latest strike. However, the Austrian side dropped valuable points versus Lokomotiv Moscow.

With their group also containing both Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, Salzburg had to win their game against the Russians. Arguably their most winnable group stage fixture ending in a draw, though, means that Jesse March’s men must pick up points against the two favourites.

Salzburg’s Europa League qualification could also now be in doubt following their draw. If both Bayern and Atleti pick up maximum points in both fixtures against the group’s lesser teams, Salzburg and Lokomotiv’s meeting in Russia would effectively become a play-off.

If Salzburg are to drop out of Europe early, it could open the door for a more straightforward swoop for the club’s stars – Notably Szoboszlai and Zambian forward Patson Daka.
