Arsenal starlet asks to leave the club amid Premier League interest

Arsenal starlet asks to leave the club amid Premier League interest

Eddie Nketiah wants out

Having come so close to leaving in the summer, there was a great deal of surprise that Eddie Nketiah remained in north London past the transfer deadline.

England’s record goalscorer at U21 level, Nketiah has never really made the transition to the top flight that many at Hale End expected him to, and with his contract running out this summer, was due to depart.

It was thought that Nketiah was heading to Crystal Palace last transfer window, but a prospective move fell through, and the striker has made just 2 appearances for Mikel Arteta this season, both in the Carabao Cup.

Now, as per the Daily Mail, the forward has re-affirmed his desire to depart, despite “last-ditch” efforts to keep him at the club by Arteta himself. Already 22 years old, it does feel as though Nketiah must be getting regular game time somewhere, and that seems unlikely in north London.

As per the report:

“Eddie Nketiah has informed Arsenal he wants to leave the club, ending their hopes of persuading him to stay.”

The report also adds that Crystal Palace and Borussia Monchengladbach are interested in signing Nketiah. Could we see the striker remain in the Premier League with Palace?

Arsenal in the hunt for a striker

Even before Nketiah’s decision, Arsenal were likely to be in the market for a striker in the summer window, with Alexandre Lacazette also out of contract come July, leaving only the ageing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the young Folarin Balogun as options for Mikel Arteta.

They were linked with Fiorentina hitman Dusan Vlahovic, but those rumours have since gone cold.

101 took a look at five alternatives the Gunners could look at should they not land the Serbian. One thing seems certain, the Gunners will need a new number 9 for next season.
