Arsenal are set to battle Barcelona for the signing of Schalke attacking midfielder Max Meyer in the summer, according to Spanish publication Sport.
The player is out of contract with the Bundesliga club in the summer and would be available on a free transfer as of 1 June.
However, it is understood that the Catalan Giants lead the race to land the German midfielder, despite the recent acquisition of Phillipe Coutinho from Liverpool.
Out of contract
Meyer looks destined to depart Schalke this summer, with his contract set to expire in the summer.
The player has also been unable to agree on new terms with the Bundesliga club and is showing no signs of a willingness to renew.
The 22-year-old is considered to be one of Germany’s biggest up and coming talents, having already made an impressive 140 Bundesliga appearances.
In that time, he has managed an impressive combined total of 34 goals and assists in the German top tier.
Barcelona lead the race
It is the Spanish league leaders who are at the front of the queue to sign Meyer.
The Nou Camp based club have already made the German midfielder an offer to join them in the summer.
Meanwhile, at the Emirates, Arsenal are also hoping to land the signing of Meyer, with manager Arsene Wenger a big fan of the player.
An official from Schakle is reported to have said:
“Max will decide soon if he wants to stay.
Max is happy here, it’s his home, but we have to look for an economic deal that can convince him.”
The player recently posted this comment on former Schalke teammate and current Arsenal full-back Sead Kolasinac’s Instagram live stream.
