Diop’s West Ham stint
Issa Diop joined West Ham from French outfit Toulouse in the summer of 2018.
The Hammers are believed to have paid around £22.5m for the centre-back’s services.
In total, Diop has now racked up 64 appearances across all competitions for the London outfit.
The 23-year-old has shown signs of promise in said ties, but he has also put on a few questionable displays, especially this term.
However, not all of the blame can be put on Diop, as West Ham haven’t exactly been in top form this campaign, and currently sit 16th in the English top-flight, only above the relegation zone due to goal difference.
Arsenal eyeing Diop
Despite being somewhat inconsistent, Diop looks to be attracting interest from one of the Premier League’s ‘big six’.
The Daily Mirror, writing on Sunday, claims that Arsenal are plotting a move for the West Ham defender, as Mikel Arteta looks to iron out the Gunners’ defensive issues.
The Spaniard has certainly improved Arsenal’s backline since his return to the Emirates earlier this season.
But no amount of coaching can legislate for the errors that the likes of David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi make far too often.
Granted, Mustafi has put in some solid shifts under Arteta, but if Arsenal wish to return to the Champions League, you would think that the capital giants need to sign at least one top centre-back in the near future.
Is Diop that man, though? As already mentioned, whilst the Frenchman has shown signs of promise, and is still fairly young, he does put on some rather questionable displays.
As a result, Arsenal may be better served looking for a more experienced, reliable central defender to prop up their backline.
