Arsenal provide insight into Aaron Ramsdale-Bernd Leno fight

Leno dropped for Norwich win

German shot-stopper Bernd Leno was forced to watch on from the substitutes bench as Arsenal secured their first win of the season against Norwich at the Emirates stadium.

Summer signing Aaron Ramsdale was instead handed his Premier League debut for the Gunners, and walked away with a clean sheet having had little to do. However, he impressed with his footwork, a department in which Leno has long been notoriously lacklustre.

With three games in ten days coming up for the Gunners, it is expected that both will be given a shot in goal, but who will be Arteta’s main man?

Who will start going forward?

Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Burnley, Arteta refused to be drawn on who his number one will be moving forward.

When asked about the pair, the tactician explained:

We want them to make each other better. We are trying to bring players that can raise the level of the position, the level of the team the leave of the club. Bernd should be disappointed and he should support his teammates like they all have with him. That’s exactly what he’s done.

However, he was quick to discredit rumours that Leno reacted badly to being dropped from the side, saying:

“No, that’s not true. He could be frustrated but he was top with his teammates. That’s not true.”

He also refuted claims from Christian Falk that Leno has been promised a start in the North London derby in ten days’ time, as a result of his disappointment at being dropped in the first place.

Arteta joked that:

“I don’t know where they [the reports] are coming from but they are ahead of me. I think I am the one who picks the team at the weekend. I haven’t made a decision on my team for Saturday or for the North London Derby.”
