As per a report from Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail this afternoon, Premier League giants Arsenal will open negotiations with Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka in January, regarding a move to the Emirates in the summer.
Goretzka, a 22-year-old all-action German midfielder, has been with Schalke since a move from Bochum in 2013, but his contract with Die Knappen is set to expire next summer.
As a result, speculation was rife earlier this summer that the 12-time capped international had agreed to join Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2018.
However, Goretzka himself has since refuted these rumours, insisting that he has not agreed a deal with any other club.
The goalscoring midfielder, who has already netted 6 times for Germany, has been earmarked by a host of European giants as a potential free agent target next summer.
Along with Bayern, all of Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool, Juventus and Barcelona have been linked with moves for Goretzka, but, as per reports in the English media this afternoon, it is Arsenal who are ready to open negotiations with the in-demand Schalke star.
Arsene Wenger is thought to be in the market for midfield reinforcements, with Santi Cazorla still sidelined with a long-term heel injury, Jack Wilshere reportedly considering a January exit in search of more regular playing time, and Mesut Ozil expected to depart either in January or next summer.
As such, Goretzka has moved to the top of Arsene Wenger’s wishlist, though Manchester City and Juventus are also rumoured to be particularly keen on his signature.
