Arsenal to meet Sevilla star’s agent ‘over the next few days’

According to numerous reports across the European media this afternoon, Arsenal are preparing a move for Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega.

Banega, a 29-year-old Argentinian international, has spent the majority of his club career plying his trade in Spain, having made the move to Valencia from Boca Juniors as a highly-regarded youngster in 2008.

After spending 6 years on the books of Los Che (including loan spells with both Newell’s Old Boys and Atletico Madrid), Banega made the move to fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla in the summer of 2014 for an undisclosed fee.

Following 2 years at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, the gifted South American was on the move once more, this time joining Serie A giants Inter Milan as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Sevilla.

However, despite racking up 6 goals and 6 assists in Serie A during his solitary campaign with Inter, overall, Banega struggled to adapt to Italian football, with the midfielder having secured a return to Sevilla last summer as a result.

And the Boca Juniors youth product has since gone on to re-establish himself as a crucial member of Los Hispalenses’ squad, with Banega having started 41 games across all competitions this past season, notching 5 goals and 5 assists in the process.

PL bound?

But, though he only returned for his second spell in Andalusia less than 12 months ago, reports from the likes of GazzaMercato and Il Corriere del Calcio this afternoon suggest that Banega could be on the move once again this summer, with Premier League outfit Arsenal expressing an interest in the midfielder’s services.

The Corriere’s report reveals that the Gunners are expressing a serious interest in the Argentine international (who appeared as a substitute during the Albiceleste’s opening World Cup fixture with Iceland), with Unai Emery keen to reunite with his former charge.

GazzaMercato, meanwhile, go as far as to claim that a meeting between Banega’s representatives and Arsenal has already been set up, with the parties set to discuss a possible move for the Sevilla man to the Emirates in London this week.

Rumours linking Arsenal with a move for Banega come on the back of mounting claims that Jack Wilshere is set to depart the Emirates this summer, with early reports suggesting that the capital outfit could seal a deal for the Argentine for just 12 million Euro.
