As per a report from Turkish outlet Aksam this afternoon, Arsenal have made an offer to soon-to-be out of contract Besiktas midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup.
Surplus to requirements
Ozyakup, a 25-year-old central/attacking midfielder, spent four years with Arsenal’s youth setup from 2008 to 2012, having arrived at the club from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar.
However, the technically-gifted starlet failed to make the grade amongst the wealth of talents available to Arsene Wenger in North London, and was eventually sold to Besiktas 5 years ago for a paltry £400,000.
In the end, a move away from the Emirates proved the best possible decision for Ozyakup, though, with the Dutch-born Turkish international having since gone on to establish himself as an absolute mainstay in Besiktas’ midfield, as well as being named the club’s captain.
He has also managed to rack up 30 caps for Turkey, with Arda Turan having previously stated that Ozyakup is the man to take over leadership of the national team once he decides to call time on his international career.
Over the last two seasons in the Turkish top-flight, the former Arsenal man racked up an impressive 14 goals and 14 assists, with his contributions having helped steer his side to a momentous Super Lig crown last season.
However, Ozyakup’s current deal at the Vodafone Arena is set to expire in the summer, with little indication to this point that Besiktas’ captain has any intention of putting pen to paper on a new deal with the club over the coming months.
As such, a number of clubs have been linked with respective attempts to lure Ozyakup away from Turkey on a free transfer come the summer, with the likes of Everton and even Cardiff City named as potential suitors.
However, as per the aforementioned report from Aksam this afternoon, Arsenal have jumped firmly to the front of the queue for the gifted midfielder, with the Gunners having tabled a ‘firm offer’ to Ozyakup for his services.
The report also states that Arsene Wenger has held conversations with the Turkish international regarding a return to the club, with Ozyakup said to be ‘seriously considering’ trying his luck in North London for a second time.
