Arsenal miss out on Emi Buendia

Arsenal have been dealt an early blow to their summer business as Aston Villa announced the signing of Norwich City midfielder Emi Buendia earlier today.

Arsenal were believed to have been interested in signing the Argentine, but Aston Villa provided the more attractive financial package to the Canaries, according to journalist Chris Wheatley.

It means that Mikel Arteta has missed out on one of his primary targets as he looks to inject some much-needed creativity into his side.

Brandt and Calhanoglu on Arsenal’s radar

Whilst Martin Odegaard remains Arsenal’s number one target, it is unclear whether the Norwegian will be allowed to leave the Estadio Bernabeu this summer. He was thought to be out of favour under Zinedine Zidane, but new Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti may feel differently and look to keep the player.

If, as currently seems likely, they are unable to attain the 22-year-old midfielder, the club are looking into other options.

The first of these is Hakan Calhanoglu, as reported by CBS journalist James Benge.

Calhanoglu is out of contract at AC Milan this summer, and would certainly provide creativity. The Turkish international provided ten assists as the San Siro side finished second in the Serie A, as well as chipping in with four goals.

Still only 27, Calhanoglu still has plenty of years at the top, although how suited he is to Arteta’s high press vision remains up for debate.

Another name familiar to Arsenal fans is that of Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt. The Gunners have been linked with a move for the midfielder since he was playing at Bayer Leverkusen, and these links resurfaced in the January window as the club desperately searched for a creative force.

Fast forward six months, and Brandt is once again being linked with a move to North London. He is believed to be free to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, and a fee of 25 million could well be enough to convince the Black and Yellow to part ways with the midfielder.

Neither player fits the same mould as Emi Buendia however, which begs the question- Just what are Arsenal planning this summer?
