Arsenal & Man United
The Sun on Wednesday link Arsenal and Man United in the transfer market, as it’s believed the Gunners could make a move for a Red Devil.
So far this summer, Arsenal have only completed one piece of business in the transfer market signing left-back Sead Kolasinac from Schalke on a free.
At the same time, Gooners are getting frustrated with Ivan Gazidis’s claim that Arsene Wenger’s new contract would be a ‘catalyst for change’ at the Emirates Stadium, following Tuesday’s news that all the members of Wenger’s backroom staff are getting new deals.
As for Man United, Jose Mourinho seems to be attacking the summer window with full force, signing Victor Lindelof from Benfica while deals for Alvaro Morata and others could be finalised soon.
Defender on the move
The arrival of Lindelof at Old Trafford isn’t good news for everyone at United, specifically Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who have dropped down the pecking order.
That’s opened up an opportunity for the Gunners, as the Sun tell their readers the following:
Arsenal are keeping close tabs on Chris Smalling – as Victor Lindelof prepares to finalise his Manchester United move today.
The feeling is that Wenger will play three at the back next season – so will next at least one new centre back.
Smalling, 27, is under contract at Man United until 2019.
While it’s possible the England international could move on this summer, it feels equally plausible that the Sun’s story is an effort from the player to clarify his position at Old Trafford next season.
With United playing in the Champions League, and with the club poised to once again be serious EPL title challengers, one suspects Smalling is going nowhere.
