Arsenal legend questions PSG’s use of Lionel Messi & pinpoints issues with the French side

Arsenal legend questions PSG’s use of Lionel Messi & pinpoints issues with the French side

Messi’s PSG stint

Lionel Messi would of course depart boyhood club FC Barcelona on a free transfer over the summer, choosing to link up with PSG following the expiration of his contract in Spain.

Messi has since gone on to make seven appearances for PSG  – four in Ligue 1 and three in the Champions League.

In Europe, the veteran has once again been at his stunning best.

The Argentine scored a superb goal against Manchester City last month and would then net a brace last week as the Parisian outfit notched a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig.

In the league, however, Messi is still yet to get off the mark for his new club.

Thierry Henry on Lionel Messi

Messi and PSG’s latest outing would see them play out a 0-0 affair against Marseille, though in PSG’s defence they did go down to 10 men in the second half.

Even before this, however, Messi did not look at his best on the day, and this has so far proven to be the case in all of his Ligue 1 outings to date.

Now, Arsenal legend and former teammate of Messi, Thierry Henry, has questioned PSG’s use of Messi, suggesting that the Argentine should instead be used in the middle, rather than the right-wing:

“He [Messi] is isolated, he is on the ball less. I wouldn’t say he’s sad, but he’s isolated. I prefer him through the middle.

“I’m having trouble with Leo out on the right. In the middle, he can set the tempo. Something needs to be found in order to get Mbappe, Neymar and Messi to play together.”

Henry also suggested that in the current PSG team, there are too many conductors:

“Messi doesn’t speak a lot, he speaks with the ball. For now, it’s Kylian’s team. Kylian is the one who’s making it shine most of all. The ball goes more towards him. At any single moment there can only be one conductor, otherwise you can’t play at the same tempo. And in this team, there are too many conductors.”
